North Captiva Island and other Lee County Barrier Islands
Friday, April 23, 2010
North Captiva Island is an island in Lee County in southwest Florida, located just offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. It lies just north of Captiva Island, separated by a channel called Redfish Pass . It lies just south of Cayo Costa Island, separated by Captiva Pass. Like Captiva and Sanibel Islands, North Captiva is a barrier island to Pine Island (to the east of Captiva and north of Sanibel), and is very narrow. There is no automobile access to the island which adds to it's exotic island charm.

With about 300 homes built and 300 vacant lots, the island is about half way to build out. Since the island can only be accessed by boat or small plane a regular ferry service runs from Pine Island Marina, the "Island Girl" charter service, at two hour intervals, serving both tourists and locals who own neither boats or airplanes. For guests staying at the North Captiva Island Club there is a new express checkin service that valet parks your car in either a secure fenced lot or for an upgrade a garage. Then you check your bags with an attendant, grab your keycard or code for your vacation beach home and jump on a free shuttle bus ride to the marina just minutes away. Then you hop aboard the "Just For Fun" 49 passenger boat on the shortest route offered across Pine Island Sound to the North Captiva Island Club where you get in your golf cart and drive directly to your home with your luggage waiting for you. There is even an option to have your groceries delivered and stocked in the refrigerator and cabinets.

Lee County's 47-mile barrier coastline is one of the longest on the Gulf. The low islands here generally follow a northwest-southeast trend. From north to south, Lee County beaches and passes include southern Gasparilla Island (the town of Boca Grande), Boca Grand Pass, Cayo Costa, Captiva Pass, North Captiva Island, Redfish Pass, Captiva Island, Wulfert Channel inlet, Sanibel Island, San Carlos Bay inlet, Bunch Beach, Matanzas Pass, Fort Myers Beach on northern Estero Island, Estero Island, Big Carlos Pass, Lovers Key, Little Carlos Pass, Big Hickory Island, Big Hickory Pass and Bonita Beach.

Redfish Pass was formed in 1926 by a hurricane that destroyed much of the new development in Florida at that time. It hit Fort Lauderdale, Dania, Hollywood, Hallandale and Miami before traveling across the state and hitting southwest Florida and Lee County. Born near the Cape Verde Islands off Africa on Sept. 6, 1926, the storm moved across the Atlantic and into the Caribbean. It was reported off St. Kitts on Sept. 14. Two days later it had moved into the Bahamas, and by Sept. 17 it had taken aim at South Florida.
