Flip flops are optional Wednesday, August 25, 2010 Submitted by Aurelie Shuleshko, GWCA Member Flip flops are optional at the North Captiva Island Club! Barefoot is the best way to feel the soft sand and warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. This island paradise, located in Southwest Florida, is complete with swaying palm trees, powdery sand beaches, friendly dolphins, shy manatees, graceful tarpon, and peaceful sunsets. Your journey begins aboard the “Just For Fun” water taxi for a short trip across the bay to the island. Don’t miss seeing the shell covered home as you leave the marina. The boat captains are friendly and helpful creating a festive mood with their island music gently playing in the background. Upon arrival, you are warmly greeted by staff who explain all the amenities of North Captiva Island. You are also told that the island has no cars! Access is by boat or plane only. Bicycles and golf carts are available to get around. Of course, you can also wander the island by foot on the sandy pathways. Kayaks are another convenient means to experience the island’s beaches and coves. While exploring, no doubt you’ll encounter friendly, laid back residents who will offer their insights on the tranquility and quirks of island living. Whether you view the island by land or by sea, your vista will include the candy- colored luxury beach houses, cottages, and condos that dot the island. Some are very spacious and some are … well, romantic. There are plenty of rental homes and condos available to fit all sizes and budgets. All are fully furnished with everything you’ll need to unwind and let go. Just bring your bathing suit and sunscreen. Imagine waking up and falling asleep to the sounds of the waves, walking the beach to find the perfect shell, and lazing in the shade with a good book. A quaint small store is open for groceries and other sundries. There is a variety of charming restaurants (casual or elegant) to suit your mood. Don’t miss the juicy burger and onion strips at the pool bar! Maybe it was the setting but it was especially yummy. The shrimp caesar salad was loaded with grilled shrimp and also a winner for a light lunch. A beach vacation on North Captiva Island offers a variety of activities including tennis courts and a large pool complex. In addition to casual beach fun, you can arrange for optional excursions such as the Dolphin & Nature Tour, Back Bay Fishing, and the Snorkeling & Shelling trip. Every Friday, hop on the boat for a romantic sunset cruise. This island is the perfect destination for a beach wedding. Lucky is the bride and groom who say their vows on that pristine beach as the sun sets behind them. Married couples may consider a Vow Renewal ceremony on the beach. Any wedding on the beach would be especially serene and lovely. Then, after the ceremony, let the party begin in the moonlight as the sounds of the waves are drowned out by the music of that first magical dance! North Captiva Island Club is simply a place to feel the warmth of the sun and the cooling breezes off the Gulf during the day. Do nothing but nap and read in the shade. Or fill your day with fishing, tennis, kayaking, snorkeling, and biking. Once the sun goes down and the moon shimmers on the Gulf waters, you’ll never want to leave your island paradise.
