Escape to Adventure
Thursday, September 23, 2010
By Tracy Jacobs.

In the morning light, we stood at the dock’s edge anxious to board the water taxi  set to transport us from the monotonous activities of daily life to boundless adventures which awaited us on North Captiva Island and Pine Island Sound. Because North Captiva Island is only accessible by water taxi, we started the day with a scenic car ride, winding through the quaint little fishing towns of Pine Island, St. James City and Matlache.  Along the way, the two lane road is sprinkled with little shops and galleries, reflecting the towns’ history and culture, beckoning curious visitors. As we pulled up to the docking area, to our surprise Captain Ted was awaiting our arrival with a smile on his face. “Just for fun” could not have been a more appropriate name for the water taxi service that is dedicated to whisking guests away to the luxuries of North Captiva Island Resort. He quickly took our bags, assisted us with boarding and made us comfortable for the ride.  Rounding the first bunch of mangroves, I felt the stress start to melt away, while listening as Captain Ted described the surrounding islands and their history in Pine Island Sound and Southwest Florida.  In the distance, hopeful fishermen bobbed in their boats, trying their hand at the famous Southwest Florida tarpon fishing. As we moved closer to shore, a family of dolphins chased our boat, jumping and twirling in the wake while feasting on the variety of sea creatures that call the Gulf of Mexico home. North Captiva Island first appeared on the horizon as a dot, but as we continued to approach it, we could see luxurious homes, beach bungalows and an array of Florida vacation rentals dotting the white sandy beaches with their high rooftops lending themselves to breathtaking 360º views.  The excitement rose in anticipation of arriving at our own private island Florida retreat.  Finally the boat pulled up to the dock, and from the moment we stepped ashore, I was amazed at all the island had to offer.  North Captiva Island Resort is full service all the way!  The amenities offered encourage visitors to explore the natural wonders that await.  From navigating kayaks through the scenic waterways surrounding the island, to paddling to the neighboring islands in Pine Island sound, there are boundless opportunities to soak up the natural beauty.  If one is not feeling quite so energetic, there are boat charters are also available, complete with private captains for boat excursions to expose guests to secret spots for excellent tarpon fishing and snorkeling, to transport a lucky couple to a secluded shore for a fantasy beach wedding, or to allow passengers the opportunity to simply relax and unwind while spending the afternoon dolphin watching. There are also island jet ski rentals and scuba trips available and I have heard that lucky visitors may even get to frolic with the dolphins on the edges of the island.

While nothing can top Mother Nature’s delights, North Captiva Island Resort spared no expense when it comes to luxury, with two Olympic sized pools for lap swimming or sunbathing, and Mango’s Poolside Grill wide array of refreshing tropical drinks. The laid back attitude of the island is even evident in the preferred forms of transportation, primarily golf carts and bicycles.  We got into our cart and made our way to the private Florida beach house, which welcomed us with its’ natural privacy created by tropical foliage sprinkled with majestic palm trees and the wildlife that laid claim to the amazing habitat.  We felt as if we were the only guests on North Captiva Island!  Upon arrival, I surveyed my secluded retreat and was again amazed at all the amenities provided.  From a private pool with a conveniently placed gas grill, to a rooftop Jacuzzi, every desire had been anticipated.   The day passed too quickly, filled with beachcombing, exploring the island and re-energizing of my soul.  Nearing sunset, I gazed out upon the aqua blue waters of southwest Florida’s gulf, and could almost hear the waves inviting me in for swim. Completing this harmonious picture and ending the day on a perfect note, I could see a young couple standing on the water’s edge with the reddish sun dipping behind them as they exchanged vows.

The North Captiva Island Resort rentals are fully furnished with all the comforts of home.  I can only say I felt that I had died and gone to heaven, without breaking the bank!  No matter your family size or the occasion, these Florida Beach houses will not disappoint. While the majority of guests travel by water taxi, there is also a private airstrip on the island and some of these luxurious homes come equipped with private docks.
North Captiva Island brings a sense of peace and relaxation like no other! From the friendly resort staff to the infinite variety of wildlife and scenic waterways, to the  luxurious homes that encrust the island like jewels, this is a way to experience the million dollar life on a budget!
North Captiva Island is truly where nature has remained untouched and its’ serene gulf shores take over to guarantee a stress-free, relaxing, adventure with every visit!  Don’t let it pass you by!
